Crawler Crane Checks Before the Next Lift

A crawler crane may start, slew and raise its boom while still carrying a defect that makes the next lift unsafe. The useful question is whether the machine, its configuration and the ground are ready for the planned work.

This guide brings together the main items to discuss with the operator, crane-maintenance team and competent person. A condition inspection, maintenance service, load test and statutory examination have different purposes. One should not be described as covering all four unless that work is actually included and the people carrying it out are appropriately qualified.

Know the crane and its configuration

A crawler crane runs on tracks and may have a lattice or telescopic boom. Its rated lifting capacity changes with radius, boom or jib arrangement, counterweight and other conditions in the manufacturer's load chart. Track position, level, ground support and operating mode also matter.

Travel with a suspended load is permitted only where the specific machine's instructions and chart allow it, with the prescribed conditions met. Do not infer permission from the fact that the machine has tracks. Manufacturer reference libraries themselves warn that generic charts do not replace the documents for a specific serial-numbered crane. [1]

Types of cranesInspection emphasis
Lattice-boom crawler craneBoom/jib structure, pins, pendants, ropes, winches, slew assembly and tracks
Telescopic crawler craneBoom sections, cylinders, ropes where fitted, slew assembly and tracks
Truck-mounted or all-terrain mobile craneOutriggers, chassis, tyres, boom and the fitted safety/control systems
Rough-terrain craneOutriggers, running gear, boom, steering and braking systems
Pick-and-carry craneLoad-handling configuration, steering, tyres, brakes and permitted travel conditions
Tower craneMast/support arrangements, connections, hoists, slew system and limit devices
Gantry or EOT craneRails, end stops, wheels, hoist, controls and supporting structure

No capacity range in a general article can replace the selected machine's rated chart. For crawler crane price comparisons, ask about configuration, condition, hours, inspection history and included equipment; an asking price alone says little about readiness for service.

Areas that deserve close attention

ComponentConditions to investigateWhat to record
Wire rope and end connectionsBroken wires, corrosion, distortion, wear and damaged terminationsRope identity, location of defects, measurements and photographs
Slew bearing and fastenersUnusual play, noise, lubrication problems or suspect fastenersMeasurements against the manufacturer's method and limits
UndercarriageTrack wear, incorrect tension, damaged rollers or final-drive leaksCondition and measurements using the model's procedure
Hoist brakes and winchesDrift, abnormal operation, wear or leaksFindings from the specified inspection and functional tests
Hydraulic systemLeakage, abnormal heat, erratic movement or cylinder driftSymptoms and any authorised diagnostic readings
Boom and jibDeformation, corrosion, suspect welds, damaged pins or missing retainersExact location and the specialist assessment needed
Safety devices and operational aidsFaults, damage, bypassing or incorrect configuration inputsDevice identification, fault status and corrective action
Engine and electrical systemsStarting faults, damaged wiring, leaks or warning indicationsFault history, visible condition and service requirements

Do not retorque a sample of slew bolts using a generic monthly rule, grease until seals purge without instructions, or weld a structural defect as routine site maintenance. The repair or inspection method must suit the design, fastener system and manufacturer's requirements.

A practical crane inspection checklist

Before the shift, the authorised operator or designated competent person should use the machine's checklist and the site procedure. The following are the key areas to include; the method and acceptance criteria come from the applicable instructions.

  • Controls, emergency functions and fitted indicators respond as intended.
  • Hoses and fittings show no condition requiring removal from service; fluid levels are within the specified range.
  • Hooks, latches, rope reeving and visible rope sections are checked.
  • Boom/jib connections, pins and retainers are in the required condition and configuration.
  • Tracks, ground support and machine level suit the planned position and work.
  • Visibility, access, guards and relevant electrical equipment are checked.
  • Brakes and fitted operational aids are checked using the prescribed procedure.
  • The current load chart, configuration information and required records are available.

A trial lift or test load must not be improvised as a daily check. Use the prescribed procedure, authorised personnel and a controlled area. Record defects, stop affected work where necessary, and document clearance before return to service. OSHA's US inspection framework is a useful reference for the distinction between shift, periodic and post-repair checks; it is not an Indian legal standard. [2]

Set inspection frequency from the right requirements

Use a schedule that combines the manufacturer's instructions, the site's operating conditions and the applicable legal requirements. It should distinguish pre-use observations, planned detailed inspections, service tasks and formal examinations.

TriggerWhat to plan
Before use and after a moveRelevant pre-use checks, setup, level and ground assessment
Scheduled detailed inspectionRope/sheave condition, wear trends, brakes, structure and other specified components
After assembly or configuration changeAssembly/configuration verification and required checks before operation
After relevant repair, damage or abnormal eventAssessment and testing appropriate to what changed or occurred
Statutory examination or test dueRequired scope, qualified/recognised person, records and next-due date

A service at 250, 500 or 1,000 hours does not automatically satisfy a calendar-based examination requirement. Equally, a certificate does not excuse daily attention to a newly developed defect. Keep service, inspection and examination records linked to the crane's identity.

Indian crane certification and the applicable rules

Do not assume that one certificate form number or one inspection interval covers every construction site, factory and state. India's Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code consolidates earlier central legislation; the applicable central/state rules and any continuing provisions need to be checked for the establishment. [3]

Ask the site's responsible safety professional and the competent person to confirm the governing requirements, examination and test intervals, recognition needed, record-retention period and required certificate format. A reference to a legacy BOCW rule or Factories Act section, on its own, does not establish the complete current requirement for your site.

Check the crane's serial number, examination scope, configuration, restrictions, defects, examiner's authority and next-due date against the actual machine. A maintenance company's condition report does not, by itself, replace a required statutory certificate or authorise lifting.

Understand the safety devices

A safe load indicator or load moment indicator provides information and warnings related to the lifting condition. The exact sensing, display and limiting functions depend on the system fitted. It must receive the correct configuration inputs and be checked according to its instructions. Configuration entry and calibration are different activities.

An anti-two-block system addresses the risk of the hook block approaching the boom-tip assembly too closely. Boom-hoist or luffing limits address their respective movements. These aids do not replace a load chart, lift planning or judgement about the ground and surroundings.

Do not bypass a device to continue a lift. Stop affected operations and obtain the required assessment. US OSHA provisions for certain failed operational aids include specific conditions and temporary measures; their repair periods are not blanket permission to work with faulty equipment and should not be presented as an Indian grace period. [4]

Wire rope findings that require action

Rope construction, use, damage location and the applicable standard affect inspection and discard decisions. The figures below retain useful technical reference points from US OSHA 1926.1413; they are not a universal Indian discard table. Where its Category II criteria are met, OSHA requires affected operations to stop pending its specified corrective action. [5]

Rope categoryOSHA Category II reference criterion
Running ropeSix randomly distributed broken wires within one lay, or three within a single strand over that lay
Rotation-resistant ropeTwo random breaks within six rope diameters, or four within thirty diameters
Pendant or standing ropeOver two broken wires in a lay beyond the end connection, or over one in a lay at the connection
Diameter reductionMore than five per cent below nominal diameter

Kinks, crushing, birdcaging, corrosion, heat/electrical damage or a broken strand also require assessment. Do not wait to reach a broken-wire count when other serious damage is present. The appointed inspector must apply the relevant rope-maker, crane-maker and governing criteria; this table does not authorise continued operation. [5]

Plan crane maintenance and spare parts

Use the actual manual for grease type and quantity, lubrication points, bolt inspection methods, rope care, filters, oils and adjustment procedures. Confirm any condition-based checks and calendar requirements. A universal "grease at 100 hours, filters at 500 hours, calibration annually" table can be wrong for the crane.

Build a crawler crane parts list from inspection findings, maintenance schedules and lead times. Filters, approved hoses and suitable consumables may justify local stock. Wire ropes, safety-system components, critical fasteners and brake parts need exact specifications and traceability; physical resemblance is not enough.

For a replacement wire rope, identify the required diameter, construction, grade, lay, length and termination arrangement through the approved specification. For a slew bearing or structural component, confirm the part identity and installation requirements before committing supply and labour.

Define an on site crawler crane inspection

Agree the accessible areas, inspection method, measurements, functional checks and report format before the visit. Identify separately any dismantling, non-destructive testing, calibration, load testing or statutory certification required. A visual visit cannot reliably promise examination of every hidden component.

Send Mech On Site the crane model and serial number, configuration, location, known defects and the purpose of the inspection. Ask for the proposed crane service scope, personnel, equipment, limitations and charges. Parts supply and any specialist work should be confirmed separately where needed.

Share your crane details to request an inspection scope or parts quotation.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a crawler crane be inspected

Follow its manufacturer's schedule and the applicable site and legal requirements. Include pre-use checks and relevant post-assembly, post-repair and periodic examinations; confirm the formal intervals for your establishment.

Does a crane inspection include certification

Only if the agreed work includes the required statutory examination by a person recognised for it and the appropriate certificate is issued. A repair report or visual condition check alone is different.

When must wire rope be replaced

Use the criteria for the rope, crane and applicable standard. Broken wires, diameter loss, distortion, corrosion and other damage must be assessed together by the appropriate competent person.

Does an SLI make the crane safe to lift

It is an aid, not proof that the full lifting setup is safe. The correct chart, configuration, ground, load and lifting plan remain essential.

What does a crawler crane cost to hire

Request a current quote for the capacity at the required radius, configuration, duration and site. Include transport, assembly, operator, fuel and any other agreed services in the comparison.
