The Real Cost of a Hydra or Farana Crane on Rent
A crane hire quote can look attractive until the minimum shift, diesel, transport and overtime are added. Another quote may cost more at first glance but include several of those items. Comparing the headline rate alone can lead to an expensive booking.
Start with the lift, then compare the full cost. For a hydra crane, farana crane or mobile crane, the right choice depends on load, radius, height, ground conditions and access. The machine's advertised tonnage is only the beginning.
Choose the crane for the lift
"Hydra" and "farana" are common trade descriptions on Indian sites. Ask for the make, model, configuration and load chart instead of relying on the name. A pick and carry crane, also written pick-and-carry crane, needs a different operating plan from a telescopic crane set up on outriggers.
| Crane type | Work it may suit | Detail to establish before selection |
|---|---|---|
| Hydra or farana pick-and-carry crane | Material handling and certain short-distance lifting tasks | Capacity at the required radius and any permitted travel-with-load conditions |
| Telescopic mobile crane | Erection and lifting where reach and setup access matter | Boom configuration, working radius, outrigger arrangement and ground support |
| Crawler crane | Projects requiring tracked lifting equipment and planned assembly | Capacity chart, boom arrangement, transport, assembly and ground-bearing requirements |
| Tower crane | Repeated lifting within a defined building-site layout | Capacity at each radius, foundation/support design, erection and dismantling |
A crane rated for a particular maximum load does not lift that load at every radius. For example, "14 tonnes" is not enough information to decide whether a crane can place your load at the required distance. The selected machine's load chart and an appropriate lift plan must govern the job. Crane manufacturers issue charts for particular configurations and machines. [1]
Send the load weight including lifting accessories, pickup and placement points, lifting height, working radius, access photographs and site location. Identify whether the load must travel. The supplier and the person planning the lift should resolve missing information before dispatch.
Crane rent per hour or per day needs a common basis
An hourly rate and a monthly rate cannot be compared until the included hours and services are clear. Local availability, machine specification, hire duration and mobilisation can change crane hire charges substantially. Request current quotations for the same requirement instead of relying on a national rate band.
| Hire basis | What to compare | Cost that can be overlooked |
|---|---|---|
| Crane rent per hour | Minimum billable hours, operator and fuel | Travel or waiting time billed as working time |
| Crane rent per day | Shift length, overtime, standby and cancellation | A short lifting job charged at the minimum daily commitment |
| Monthly crane rental | Included days and hours, shift coverage and payment schedule | Overtime, idle-time terms, mobilisation and demobilisation |
Ask whether quoted charges include applicable taxes. Do not assume that "with operator" also means "with diesel", or that arrival at the gate starts the same billing clock as commencement of lifting.
A simple example of the full hire cost
The following figures are an illustration, not a MOS quotation or market rate. Suppose Offer A is ₹8,000 for an agreed shift, plus ₹3,000 fuel and ₹4,000 total transport. Offer B is ₹13,000 for the same shift, including those items. Before tax and any other extras, Offer A totals ₹15,000 and Offer B totals ₹13,000.
That comparison is useful only if the cranes are suitable for the same lift and the terms match. A more expensive suitable machine cannot be replaced by a cheaper unsuitable one merely because the quote is lower.
Dry lease and wet lease
A dry lease commonly refers to equipment without an operator. A wet lease commonly includes an operator. Suppliers use these terms differently, especially for fuel, maintenance and insurance, so the written allocation of each cost matters more than the label.
| Cost or responsibility | Dry lease | Wet lease |
|---|---|---|
| Operator | Commonly supplied by the hirer; confirm competence and authorisation | Commonly supplied with the crane; confirm shift and relief arrangements |
| Diesel | Specify who supplies, measures and pays | Specify separately even when the operator is included |
| Routine service | Allocate inspections, lubrication and consumables | Confirm the owner's and site's respective tasks |
| Breakdown and lost hire | Agree repair responsibility and billing treatment | Agree repair responsibility and billing treatment |
| Damage and insurance | Define reporting, investigation, liability and policy limitations | Define reporting, investigation, liability and policy limitations |
| Transport and assembly | List inclusions and separate charges | List inclusions and separate charges |
An operator supplied by the owner does not remove the hirer's responsibility for safe access, ground preparation and site coordination. Similarly, a dry-hire label does not automatically make the renter liable for every mechanical failure.
Eight terms to settle before crane hire
- Hours and records. State the shift, minimum hours, overtime basis, standby rules and who signs the daily log.
- Fuel. Record who supplies diesel, how quantity is measured and how refuelling is authorised.
- Operator. Confirm competence, induction, working hours, supervision and any replacement arrangement.
- Breakdown. Agree the reporting process, repair responsibility, off-hire treatment and whether an alternative crane is included or separately charged.
- Damage. Record the starting condition and set out how disputed damage will be assessed, including insurance terms.
- Documents. Identify the current inspection, examination and other documents required for the machine and site. Check that each document matches the crane's identity and configuration.
- Payment. Specify advance, deposit, billing dates, deductions, cancellation and late-payment provisions.
- Movement. Include mobilisation, demobilisation, assembly, access constraints and any additional transport arrangement.
These are points to agree, not automatic entitlements. In particular, do not assume that every breakdown day is rent-free or that a replacement crane will arrive within a set time unless the agreement says so.
Where rental margins are lost
For an owner, the margin depends on collected revenue after operating costs, finance commitments and maintenance provision. A crane may be booked and still create a cash shortfall if payment is delayed or the rate leaves little after fuel and transport.
Track billable hours, signed hours and paid hours separately. Log fuel by quantity and hour-meter reading. Record transport for both directions. Document breakdown periods and any approved deductions before the invoice is disputed.
For the hirer, a low rate can become costly if the wrong machine arrives, essential documents are missing or the access has not been checked. A pre-hire condition record helps both sides establish what was supplied, but it does not settle every later fault or damage claim by itself.
Arrange the requirement with Mech On Site
If you need a crane on rent, share the lift details, location, dates and expected shift with Mech On Site. Ask for a quote that identifies the proposed machine and lists the operator, diesel, transport and hire terms separately.
If you also need crane service or a pre-hire inspection, request it as an explicit scope. Repair cover, a replacement crane and guaranteed availability should appear in the confirmed offer if they are included.
Share your load, radius, location and dates to request a crane rental quote.
Frequently asked questions
What is the hydra crane rent per hour
There is no single rate that applies to every site. Request a local quote for the required model, minimum hours and service inclusions. Compare the total payable for your job.
How much is farana crane rent per month
It depends on the machine, location, duration, hours and operator/fuel arrangement. Ask for the included monthly hours, overtime rate and movement costs in the same quotation.
What is the difference between dry lease and wet lease
Dry usually means machine-only; wet usually includes an operator. Fuel, repair responsibility and insurance still need to be stated in writing.
Who pays when a rented crane breaks down
The agreement and circumstances determine responsibility. Document the fault, investigation and period affected, then apply the agreed repair and off-hire terms.
How do I choose crane rental near me
First verify suitability for the lift, then availability, documents, operator and the complete commercial terms. Proximity alone does not establish lifting capacity or readiness.
