Microtunnelling Equipment Repair and Maintenance Support

Microtunnelling support for surface equipment and specialist machine requirements. Identify slurry, jacking, guidance and control service scopes.

Technical Reference Guide•Primary: microtunnelling machine repair

Microtunnelling maintenance covers a system of connected equipment. Slurry pumps, separation plant, hydraulic power packs, jacking equipment, controls, guidance and the underground machine have distinct service needs. Locate the fault within that system before arranging repair. Surface pumps and power packs are different jobs from machine-drive, guidance or underground intervention work. Equipment lists, operating trends, alarm records and access conditions help identify the right specialist. The repair route depends on the affected subsystem and the project method, rather than a general request for a tunnelling mechanic.

Machine type and use

Microtunnelling uses a remotely controlled micro tunnel boring machine (MTBM), commonly with pipe jacking, to install underground pipelines with limited surface excavation. In a slurry system, the machine, slurry circuit, separation equipment, jacking frame, controls and guidance work together. Excavation and spoil-removal arrangements vary with the machine design and ground conditions.

Match the team to the subsystem

Surface support may need pump, hydraulic, electrical and separation-plant technicians. Guidance, machine controls and underground interventions require appropriate specialist and OEM/project involvement. Confirm the actual scope before deployment.

Surface maintenance and underground specialist work

Surface pumps, power packs, hoses, motors and separation equipment may be accessible for conventional maintenance after isolation. Shaft access, pipe-entry work and intervention at the machine involve the project method, ground conditions and rescue arrangements. Some drives allow no routine personnel access to the machine. Cutterhead, main-bearing, guidance and pressurised intervention work needs specialist resources beyond a general mechanic visit. A support enquiry should identify the exact subsystem and the OEM/project responsibilities.

Before the first technical call

Send the system diagram or equipment list, machine model, alarm history and the trend that changed. Useful observations include slurry flow/pressure, jacking behaviour and which controls remain available. Existing project records are preferable to an unplanned test. Identify whether the equipment is at the surface, in the shaft or beyond personnel access.

Servicing and condition inspection

Plan maintenance for the complete installation, including surface slurry equipment and power packs. Trend operating readings rather than relying on a single alarm. Inspect hoses, cables, pumps and lubrication systems by the relevant manuals. Access restrictions can make a small defect difficult to repair underground, so pre-launch condition checks and identified critical spares matter.

Inspection areas to include

  • Cutterhead drive and accessible seals, lubrication and wear indications; internal access depends on machine design and a safe intervention plan.
  • Jacking frame, cylinders, hoses and associated power pack.
  • Slurry pumps, lines and separation equipment on slurry systems.
  • Control cabinets, communications, guidance instruments, steering circuits and recorded operating trends.

What the inspection or repair report should record

A report should identify the subsystem worked on, measurements taken, component changes and outstanding project dependencies. A surface-pump service report cannot certify the condition of the underground machine. Agree who approves restart and how maintenance findings are passed to the tunnelling manager and relevant OEM specialists.

Manufacturer examples and machine identification

Manufacturer examples include Herrenknecht, TERRATEC, Akkerman, ISEKI Poly-Tech, mts Microtunneling Systems and CRCHI. Guidance, slurry pumps, separation equipment and power packs can come from separate suppliers. Identify each assembly separately when selecting parts or a specialist; the MTBM manufacturer alone may not identify the installed separation plant or control hardware. Manufacturer names identify equipment; no OEM affiliation is implied.

Planning service for an Indian project

Utility and drainage projects need a service brief that includes the launch shaft, surface compound, power supply, pipe size, drive stage and machine manufacturer. Restricted urban compounds can complicate component lifting and replacement. Slurry-handling equipment may be supplied by different manufacturers from the microtunnelling machine. Treat the installed system as several identifiable assets rather than assuming the machine brand determines every spare.

Equipment to arrange for the work

  • System-compatible diagnostic access, electrical instruments and communication-testing resources.
  • Appropriate hydraulic and slurry pressure/flow instruments, with compatible ratings and materials.
  • Guidance/survey checking equipment used by the relevant specialist.
  • Approved lifting/access arrangements and specialist workshop tools for pumps, drives or seals; intervention resources depend on the approved plan.

Before maintenance starts

Shaft entry, confined-space work and pressurised intervention follow the project'™s method statement, access arrangements and specialist controls.

Frequently asked questions

Is microtunnelling the same as horizontal directional drilling?

No. They are different trenchless methods with different equipment and service requirements. Share the machine and method rather than requesting only a tunnelling mechanic.

Can a mechanic enter the machine to inspect a fault?

Entry and pressurised intervention follow the project'™s method statement, access arrangements and specialist controls. Machine size, ground conditions and pressure determine whether an intervention is feasible.

Can any tunnelling stoppage be fixed by a hydraulic mechanic?

No. Stoppages can involve process conditions, ground, guidance, controls or mechanical systems. Start with the alarm log and operating data to identify the relevant discipline.

Can surface equipment be serviced separately from the MTBM?

Surface-equipment maintenance can be scoped separately from the underground machine. Identify the pumps, power packs, motors and separation equipment so the appropriate skills and parts can be arranged.

Does a rise in jacking pressure prove a pump problem?

No. Actual pipe/ground resistance and other project conditions can change jacking demand. Hydraulic performance must be assessed alongside the project engineering review.

Information to prepare for a repair or inspection enquiry

  • MTBM make/model, serial number, diameter and identities of affected pumps, separation equipment or power packs.
  • Affected subsystem, alarm/event logs, operating trends and existing photographs or safely recorded video.
  • Operating hours, current drive stage, ground observations and recent maintenance or interventions.
  • Site/shaft location, equipment position and project access or intervention constraints.
